When people think of Canada, one of the first things they think of is probably hockey. Our teams and players can be pretty dominating on the world stage, if we do say so ourselves. We grow up in a place where snow and ice cover the ground for a good portion of the year, so it’s pretty normal to participate in an ice-related sport or hobby at some point in our lives.
As an all-seasons playground, Kelowna has plenty of options for visitors and locals to hit the ice for a skate or a curl.
Cheering on the home teams
Kelowna is a city passionate about hockey, there’s no denying that. From the junior leagues to the professional level, it’s a beloved sport in the community.
Kelowna Rockets
Love watching hockey but don’t want to drive to Vancouver or Calgary to catch a game? Minor hockey is a strong favourite among locals. Keep the Kelowna Rockets schedule bookmarked and we guarantee you’ll have a good night at Prospera Place. Watch some up-and-comers and future-star players before they get snatched up by the NHL.

Kelowna Curling Club
A sport that’s often overlooked and a little forgotten in between Olympic years is curling. But this can be surprisingly entertaining to watch and definitely fun to try out. Head over to the Kelowna Curling Club to watch local leagues or get on the ice yourself. For their weekend specials, on Saturdays you’ll find tacos on the menu while Sundays feature burgers. For just $24, you’ll get a meal plus rental gear and 2 hours of ice time.

Lace up your skates
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced skater, there are plenty of places to lace up your skates and hit the ice.
Kelowna Capital News Centre
When it’s not being used for tournaments, the Kelowna Capital News Centre offers plenty of ice time for the whole family thanks to their Olympic-sized rink. Activities include drop-in hockey, stick and puck skills sessions, and public skating. The Kelowna Skating Club operates out of the Centre, offering programs for people of all ages and skill levels, including figure skating and hockey. The Centre also has skate rentals, and a pro-shop for skate sharpening and other equipment.

Stuart Park
For those looking to skate outdoors, Stuart Park in Kelowna’s downtown area is a popular spot. The park features a large outdoor rink open to the public during the winter months. It’s a great place to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery while skating, and includes both a concession stand and warming shelter for mid-skate breaks. Don’t worry if you don’t have skates of your own – you can rent skates right onsite. Skate trainers are also available for those a bit unsteady on the ice. We’ve used them ourselves and can assure you, there’s no judgement!

Arenas around town
It’s pretty easy to find public skating in Kelowna. Our fair city has several indoor arenas that offer sessions on a regular schedule. A couple of our favourites are the Rutland Arena and the Kelowna Memorial Arena. Both offer indoor skating and skate rentals and are a great place to take the family for a glide.
