The Best Sushi in Kelowna & Our Favourite Japanese Restaurants

Posted on June 15th, 2022 in Food & Beverage, The Shore Recommends

Looking at reviews for Best Sushi in Kelowna, you’ll find that almost every location has someone proclaiming that it’s the “best sushi in Kelowna”. Kelowna has a surprising number of Japanese restaurants, and most locals have their own favourites.

While we encourage you to try as many as you can, if you’re short on time, we’re here to help. We’ve put together a list of our top 8 favourite Japanese restaurants in Kelowna. Whether you’re looking for traditional ramen, katsu curry, specialty sushi, vegetarian or gluten-free options, there’s something for every preference.

The Best Sushi in Kelowna

1. Momo Sushi – Mission Location

Fast, fresh and delicious – Momo Sushi is consistently top-rated in Kelowna. No matter if you’re dining in, taking out or ordering delivery (find their menu here), Momo’s never keeps you waiting long. Our favourite’s include their Spicy Veggie Roll, Shitake Roll (pictured), Beet Roll and sweet Mango Roll. We also recommend adding an order of their Veggie Gyoza.

Momo Sushi Mission is conveniently located just 1km from The Shore, along scenic Pandosy street. Take a walk along the lake and make an afternoon out of it, stopping in for lunch and then doing some window shopping. If you find yourself downtown, you can also stop by their second location on Bernard street.

2. Bluetail Sushi Kelowna

Bluetail Sushi prides themselves on using the finest and freshest ingredients, and can also be found in two Kelowna locations. If you’re looking for something small and intimate, their Commerce location provides a great ambience for date night. For a bigger group, their Spall location is centrally-located and spacious.

Some of our favourite dishes include their Agedashi Tofu and Salmon Teriyaki. For sushi, be sure to try their Red Dragon Roll, White Dragon Roll, Godzilla Roll, and Spicy Deep-Fried California Roll. For kids we recommend the Tropical Roll (with avocado and sweet mango) and their 5-piece Pork Gyoza (pictured). You’ll find a ton of great options on their large menu

The oriental atmosphere at Ozeki’s is welcoming and fun, with private tatami rooms that simulate traditional Japanese seating (pictured). Being the oldest-standing Japanese restaurant in Kelowna, Ozeki’s is a community favourite and it’s highly recommended that you book a reservation ahead of time.

Some of our top picks from their menu include the Deep-Fried Spicy Tuna Roll, their Yam with Avocado Roll, and their Tempura Onion with avocado on top. We love the friendly service, fresh ingredients and presentation attention-to-detail. Browse their online menu to see what they have to offer.

While we love Ume Foods for their sushi (especially their Shiitake Roll and Yam Roll), their non-sushi menu is also worth mentioning. Their rice bowls and appetisers are unbelievably good, including their Spicy Chicken Karaage, Agedashi Tofu and Buta Bowl (pictured here with sweet and spicy pork, veggies & kimchi). Find these items and many more in their online menu.

If you’re ordering dinner to your suite, their party trays are also a great value! They’re closed on Sundays and holidays, so be sure to plan ahead.

Open 11am-8pm from Tuesday through Saturday (closed between 2pm-4pm), their covered and heated patio makes for a great dining experience. Run by Kan and his sponsored chefs from Japan, authenticity, community and quality are highly-valued in this establishment.

Our absolute favourite dish from Sushi Kojo is their Katsu Curry, along with the Salmon and Cream Cheese Roll, the Salmon and Avocado Roll, and their Dynamite Roll. View their online menu to see what they have to offer or order ahead for pickup.

If you’re a lover of seafood, their sashimi is praised for its freshness and flavour. The catering side of their business puts together sushi and sashimi platters (pictured) that are great for a group event or celebration.

With a blend of Japanese & Taiwanese, this Asian fusion restaurant is a Kelowna favourite for ramen, udon, rice bowls and more.

He opened Soy Asian Fusion with his wife Tomo in 2011, and has been serving hand-crafted and fresh Asian cuisine in Kelowna ever since.

Some of our favourite dishes are the Miso Sesame Ramen (a consistent 10/10), and their crispy Vegetable Spring Rolls. We also love their Beef Burger, which while Korean-inspired, blends delicious Japanese flavours – this is not your typical hamburger!

Many of Soy Asian Fusion’s signature dishes are available with gluten-free rice noodles, along with vegan or vegetarian options. Regardless of what you’re craving, they have you covered with a large menu of dine-in, takeout and catering options.
