Kelowna is well known for hospitality, especially when it comes to wineries. But rarely do we discuss its large variety of internationally-inspired dining options. It so happens that the city has a fantastic selection of delicious and authentic Mexican restaurants, most of which have outdoor patios where you can soak up the sun while you dine. After all, what better cuisine than Mexican to pair with the warm weather in the Okanagan?

Kelowna’s best Mexican restaurants are all a quick drive (or walk in some cases) from The Shore, located in the city’s Lower Mission area. Offering short and long-term accommodations, The Shore Kelowna is a great homebase for foodies exploring the city. Browse some of our top recommendations here for a memorable Mexican dining experience!

Hugo’s Mexican Kitchen

Kelowna’s newest Mexican restaurant has opened just in time for the summer, and it’s conveniently located right on-site at The Shore. Adding to existing locations in the lower mainland, Hugo’s Mexican Kitchen is bringing their renowned Mexican menu to the Okanagan. From guac and chips to tacos, burritos, bowls and more, you’re sure find everything you’re looking for. Most of their menu can be modified to fit a plant-based diet, made from scratch using the freshest ingredients and flavour combinations.

Not sure where to start? Hugo’s Strawberry Margarita with lime, basil syrup and muddled strawberries is a crowd favourite. Their cocktails, cervezas (beers), and impressive collection of tequila and mezcal are sure to impress.

Hector’s Casa

One of Kelowna’s original Mexican restaurants, Hector’s Casa was established in 1999 to cater to the Okanagan’s growing Mexican community. More than 20 years later, the restaurant has new Mexico-born owners but has maintained its commitment to authenticity. It was voted “Best Mexican Southwest Restaurant” by OkanaganLife for four consecutive years (2017—2020). Make sure to try their famous enchiladas—they’re even better when enjoyed on the inviting back patio.

El Taquero

El Taquero’s menu is inspired by the street-style tacos readily available for purchase in Mexico City’s bustling downtown. These include top-secret family recipes developed by El Taquero’s taco master, Izzy. The menu also features flavours from various other Mexican regions. While Izzy favours authenticity, he’s added a few things that have been requested by regulars over the years, marrying tried and true recipes with contemporary, local flavours. Stop by for a takeaway taco, weekend brunch, or a one-of-a-kind margarita (we recommend grabbing a pitcher to share). Delicious gluten-free and vegan options are also available!

Cantina Del Centro has been a favourite in Nelson for years now, housing one of BC’s largest collections of tequila and mezcal—and it has finally found its way to the Okanagan. The restaurant’s menu encompasses many Latin American dishes, but it has a soft spot for Mexican food. Everything is made in house, using local Okanagan-grown produce whenever possible. Cantina Del Centro’s vibrant atmosphere and famous cocktail selection are well worth the evening out on the town. If you’re in the mood for a margarita, we highly recommend their Coconut Habanero!

The Rutland-located family-friendly restaurant boasts a large selection of authentic Mexican fare. Latin Fiesta’s specialties include their tacos dorados (deep fried tacos with Mexican salsa, guacamole, feta cheese, and sour cream) as well as their fiesta burritos and enchilada platters. Customers often cite the eatery as the Okanagan’s most authentic Mexican restaurant. The indoor atmosphere is reminiscent of a true Mexican restaurant, while the festive outdoor patio is a favourite on sunny days. We recommend having a bottle of Jarritos with your meal. The popular soft drink imported from Mexico will make your experience even more memorable.

YLW Tacos Food Truck

If you’re looking for Mexican food on the go, keep your eyes peeled for the black YLW Tacos food truck. The famously down-to-earth staff prepares everything fresh on a daily basis. The truck can either be found on the move or parked outside ONE Boardshop on Highway 97. The food truck’s menu is not only great for a quick lunch, the flavours are absolutely phenomenal too. We highly recommend the chorizo and fish tacos.

KB&Co – not Mexican, but worth a mention!

If you’re a vegan or vegetarian, KB&Co Casual Conscious Eats offers a variety of delicious options, also just steps from The Shore. While they only offer a few Mexican options, their chipotle tacos and chilli nachos are worth checking out. Spiced walnut meat, cashew sour cream and sweet chipotle cashew cream combine to make something truly unique – if you’re new to plant-based, we promise you won’t even miss the meat!
